Accent Modification Therapy

Accent Modification TherapyIn today’s competitive marketplace, effective communication is essential.  An accent is natural for non-native speakers of American English and can contribute to one’s self of identity.

However, a heavy accent can interfere with communication.  It can create a situation where people are asked to repeat themselves on a regular basis.  Personal and professional challenges can include being misunderstood at work or by conversational partners as well as not being offered a job promotion.

A Step Above Speech Language Pathology provides accent modification, customer service, and public speaking training in Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. in order to help individuals and businesses achieve their communication potential.  Individual as well as small group training (up to 5 individuals) are available, and services are offered in the workplace or in the comfort of an individual’s home.

A licensed speech-language pathologist who is certified as a Compton P-ESL instructor provides all trainings.  Initially, a complete accent modification assessment is conducted in order to assess how the client’s accent differs from standard American English to identify specific areas of difficulty, and to design an individualized training program.  Based on the results of the assessment, training sessions will focus on specific areas of standard American English, including:

  • Articulation (i.e., production of specific speech sounds)
  • Stress/Intonation (i.e., the rhythm and melody of language)
  • Grammar
  • Rate of Speech
  • Vocal Projection
  • Previous clients have included attorneys, government employees, educators, and students.
